OldTown White Coffee - Asam Laksa
Don't know why but I suddenly have this huge craving for a bowl of authentic asam laksa noodle from a kopitiam. I never liked anything laksa before and I'm not even pregnant! I must have been hit but one of those weird cosmic ray thus the strange behavior. I tried looking around the regular food joint and eateries but they don't serve any asam laksa. So in the end I have no choice but to visit this overpriced franchise restaurant called OldTown White Coffee (sounds familiar?).
A bowl of this nice tasting asam laksa is a whooping RM8.90 but it's okay because my friend Bujal treated me for lunch because I looked particularly handsome today. Thanks Bobot!

Old Town White Coffee - Nasi Lemak Special
This year we'll continue with our review of Old Town White Coffee menus. Today I had this nasi lemak special meal. Nasi lemak, with fried chicken and a really spicy sambal. I really liked the sambal, really hot and spicy.
Too bad they're RM8.40 after government and service tax. Else I'd be having them every single day.
Oldtown White Coffee now halal?
Oldtown White Coffee is a homegrown Malaysian kopitiam styled cafe that make some really delicious local delicacies such as a variety of noodles, rice dishes and of course their famous white coffee and other beverages. I tried eating there myself, twice before I stopped going altogether since I'm doubtful of their halal status.
Which is a pity because I do think Oldtown serves some really good local dishes. They've got over than 130 outlets around the country and their business is really booming and if they'd wanted to get a simple halal certification, I don't think that would be any problem on their part, if they wanted to. But the problem is they never bothered, up until now so I had no choice but to avoid their outlet altogether.
That said whenever I walk pass an Oldtown White Coffee outlet, I still try to look for any halal logo inside or outside of their premise in the hope that maybe they would finally wizened up and get their food certified halal. But I just couldn't find any, up until today that is. Today I found a little halal logo on one of their banner outside the store. Does this mean I can enjoy their range of delicious menus without any more doubts? Can I now not frown upon my fellow Muslims who patronize their outlets without a care in the world?
Apparently no, not so fast. Yes I did saw that little halal logo on their banner but upon further inspection on their official website, I still see that questionable Nissin sausage egg noodle on sale at their restaurant. Now last time I check, Nissin instant noodle is labelled as non-halal at all hypermarket that I visited. Maybe there are more than one Nissin noodles sold out there in the market perhaps? I doubt it. A simple Google search will show you that those type of noodles are usually served at non-halal restaurants and food outlets.
Besides, if Oldtown White Coffee did get a halal certification they should have put them halal logo prominently and make them highly visible at all their stores and also their advertisements. At their website the only glimpse of halal certification is this one line that said "we also carry the HACCP and HALAL certification, making White Coffee a beverage that can be enjoyed by all". I see halal beverage but not halal food.
So would I rush to any Oldtown White Coffee outlet anytime soon? Unfortunately the answer is still a resounding no.
Update
Looks like Oldtown White Coffee is certified halal after all. At least some of them which displays the halal certification from the Islamic Food Research Centre Asia (IFRCA). IFRCA is like JAKIM certification but they cover other Asian countries as well. You can check out the list of Oldtown White Coffee outlets (and other restaurants as well) who have obtained their halal certification from IFRCA here.
If you're still in doubt, make sure you look for this logo and certification whenever you enter one of their outlets. I hope this will put this Oldtown White Coffee confusion to rest.

Old Town White Coffee - Egg Noodle
I had this egg noodle for lunch on my last visit to Old Town White Coffee. It was on promotion for only RM5.90 (before tax). The egg noodle tasted slightly better than Maggi instant noodle and it got some vegetables and dumplings.
By now it started to dawn on me that most of the menu here at Old Town White Coffee is actually really expensive! The drinks alone costs an average of 4 ringgit per glass/cup. And that is before we add the 5% government and 10% service tax. So I think from now on, my visit to Old Town will be few and far in between.
Besides, the state religious department just revoked their halal status a couple of days ago (March 2010).

OldTown White Coffee - Springy Noodle with Chicken Ham & Egg
For this visit to Oldtown White Coffee, we went to the Alamanda Putrajaya outlet.
It is a brand new outlet which has just opened its doors last month.
This time I choose to have the springy noodle with chicken ham and egg menu. It tastes suspiciously like the Myojo instant noodle that I had last week, the difference being they threw in a fried egg and some chicken ham in it. Think I can make this one myself at home and it won't even costs 6.30 ringgit.
For refreshment I had the Oldtown "cham" cold drink which is basically milked tea mixed with coffee. RM3.50. Seriously, if their drinks were much cheaper, I'd be eating here like every week. Too bad. Many thanks to my wife who treated me this time.
Old Town White Coffee - Lum Mee
Howdy folks! On my second episode of Old Town White Coffee tryout adventure, I'm going to review the Lum Mee. This noodle is not as good as the Javanese noodle, not spicy at all and the 'kick' factor is missing.
This meal costs a reasonable RM6.80++ and the drinking water is only 70++ cent. Honestly with this sky high price, I wonder why I kept coming to this restaurant.

Old Town White Coffee - Curry Mee
Since Old Town White Coffee restaurants is now certified halal, I'm going to make it a mission to sample each and every one of their dishes. That means I'm going to eat at one of their outlets at least once a month. Since they've got about a hundred different meals on their menu, I predict I will cover all of them in approximately 10 years time. Unless of course somebody at Old Town finds my effort truly inspiring and worthy of recognition and decided to give me like, free treats there everyday or something? Yeah right. Dream on.
Anyway, my first meal in this serial review was the Old Town White Coffee Curry Mee (curry noodle). It's basically noodle served with thick curry sauce and vegetables. Emmm yummy! The Curry Mee here is pictured with Old Town 'Cham' iced coffee for RM 6.80 and RM3.50 each.
