The Best Apps of 2011

As always, this is that time of the year that I list down some of the best apps or software that I have used every day in the past 365 days. Obviously 'best' is very subjective. Something that is awesome for me might not be so for others. Anyway here are what I think is the best Apps of 2011 (in alphabetical order).

7Zip

When it comes to file compression, I prefer 7Zip because it's lightweight, fast and open-source. 7Zip supports many popular archive formats such as ZIP, TAR, RAR, ISO, DMG and of course their very own 7z format. 7Zip is available for Windows only while for Mac OS I would recommend the open-source equivalent - The Unarchiver.

Audacity

Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Cross-platform, free and comes with a multitude of features. What more could you ask?

Boxee

Boxee is a cross-platform freeware HTPC (Home Theater PC) software application with a user interface and social networking features designed for the living-room TV. Boxee was originally a fork of the free and open source XBMC media center software however I prefer Boxee to XBMC because of it's lighter hardware minimum requirement. Boxee let's you play just about any media format on your TV and with the apps feature you can also surf the web, access Facebook & Twitter and watch streaming video right from your Boxee PC.

Google Chrome

I used to be a loyal Mozilla Firefox browser user for the past 5 years or so before it started to slow down and hogs so much computer memory that I had to switch to Google Chrome. Unlike Firefox, Chrome is much faster, lighter and with the ever-increasing extensions and web applications available, it's a no brainer. I still use Firefox occasionally though, to download videos from YouTube and access my university's online forum which seems to have problem with Chrome.

Dropbox.

There is no shortage of online cloud storage to choose from today but ultimately I still prefer Dropbox as my main cloud storage app. Dropbox is available on Windows, Mac & Linux and also accessible from most modern smartphone OS like iOS & Android not to mention the web interface. Although the initial 2GB space is tiny compared to others, I managed to rack up a cool 8GB of free space through its referral program. Of course I do use many different types of cloud storage providers along with Dropbox. Box.net offers free 50GB of space for iOS users and Microsoft's Skydrive gives you 25GB free. Apart from that I also use 4Shared, Mediafire, Pogoplug, Adrive, Wuala and also Google Docs to store my files.

Evernote

Evernote is hands down the ultimate notetaking and archiving app for me. This app can save formatted text, a full webpage or webpage excerpt, a photograph, a voice memo, or a handwritten "ink" note. Notes can also have file attachments and sorted into folders, then tagged, annotated, edited, given comments, searched and exported as part of a notebook. Evernote supports a number of operating system platforms (including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Chrome OS, Android, iOS and WebOS), and also offers online synchronization and backup services.

FastStone Photo Resizer

The reason this app made it to this list is because I capture a lot of photos and all of my photos are stored on my hard drive and also on one of the many free cloud-based storage that I subscribe. Since digital photos are usually big in size (2MB and above) I usually trim them down to a couple of kilobytes so that they upload faster. That's where FastStone comes in handy. This little app lets me resize hundreds of photos at the same time with just a few clicks.

GIMP

If you can't afford (a genuine) Adobe Photoshop software, GIMP is the next best thing you can use to manipulate your photos and images. Cross-platform and open-source, GIMP can do pretty much everything Photoshop can, for free.

Gmail

It's fast, have excellent spam filter and comes with a myriad of features that blows the competitors away. I have been using Gmail from the first day it becomes available and it have become my primary email service of choice since then. I now use Gmail to access and send emails from all my other free and paid email services which means I only need to open Gmail to read and write all my different email accounts today.

ImgBurn

ImgBurn is a freeware program that allows the recording of many types of CD/DVD images to recordable media. Burn a file or folder, create image file from CD/DVD, it's the only app you'll ever need. ImgBurn is for Windows only. Mac users can try Burn.

Instapaper

Instapaper is a web service that saves articles for later reading on web browsers, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Amazon Kindle. After registering a free account, the service saves articles that users select with its "Read Later" bookmarklet and presents them in a minimal, readable text layout. If you're too busy to read an interesting article on your phone or browser, just send it to Instapaper for reading later.

MagicISO

MagicISO is a very helpful utility designed for creating and managing virtual CD drives and CD/DVD discs. If your PC or notebook doesn't have a physical CD drive, MagicISO let's you mount a virtual drive from your ISO image and use it like a real CD. Very useful for playing PC games.

Microsoft Security Essential

Never pay for antivirus software again. Free Microsoft Security Essential is good enough to protect your genuine Windows PC from viruses and malwares. For serious virus problems though, I still recommend McAfee alongside Malwarebyte Antimalware.

OmmWriter

OmmWriter is a beautiful writing environment that helps you concentrate and create. It has the necessary tools you need to write and manage files, without the distracting elements that you normally find in conventional writing applications. OmmWriter opens in fullscreen mode, and has a number of backgrounds and audio tracks to increase your concentration, and to create an open space where your creativity can roam freely. Available for PC, Mac and iPad.

Springpad

Springpad is just like Evernote except that it's prettier and the web version loads much faster. I use Springpad mainly to jot down important and regularly accessed to-do list and I especially love the offline access function. Springpad is available from your web browser, iOS and also your Android device.

Sumatra PDF

How would you like to use a PDF application that is light, fast and doesn't bug you with perpetual automatic update like Adobe Reader? Sumatra PDF is just the app you need for opening your PDF files.

Tweetdeck

I have half about a dozen social networking accounts like Twitter, Facebook & Foursquare so an app like Tweetdeck which allows me to read and post to all of them at once is very useful. Although I am reluctant to use the Adobe-air based desktop app, the Tweetdeck Chrome web app works just as well minus the memory hog. Tweetdeck is also available on iOS and Android.

Unlocker

Unlocker let you avoid that WTF moment when you'd like to delete a file or remove an external drive but can't because some evil program is still accessing it. Windows only.

Winamp

I've been using Winamp to listen to my favorite music since my teenage years. It's fast, small and doesn't make duplicate copies like iTunes.

XMedia Recode

XMedia Recode is the best multimedia file converter there is. It lets you convert just about any media file format into another easily. You can choose from a preset of settings according to your device like iPhone to Android to most popular multimedia players in the market. XMedia Recode is made for Windows only but for Mac and Linux users there's always Handbrake.

As you can see, most of the apps and software featured here is either open-source or free. I'm a strong advocate of free and awesome software and I do believe that the best things in life should be free. As a matter of fact, the only proprietary software installed on my computers is Microsoft Office. Sure there's LibreOffice & OpenOffice.org as alternatives but since they usually screw up my Word documents formatting, I'm forced to stick with trusty ole Microsoft Office. They day they're 100% fully compatible with Office is the day I'll start using them.

I hope you will find this list of apps useful to your everyday computing.

Keep track of your phone & laptop with Prey

Have you ever had the unfortunate experience of getting your precious phone or laptop stolen, ever? Once that happen you can only weep in silence and pray that somehow you will see your missing device again or you can attempt to locate them using Prey!

Prey is an open-source and lightweight anti-theft solution that installs a tiny agent in your PC or phone, which silently waits for a remote signal to wake up and work its magic. This signal is sent either from the Internet or through an SMS message, allowing you to gather information regarding the device's location, hardware and network status. Additionally you can instruct the program to trigger specific actions like taking a snapshot using the device's camera, connect it to the Internet or lock your device remotely.

Prey currently supports Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices. The free account let's you track up to 3 devices and send 10 reports daily. After using it for a couple of months, I found this program actually works! It successfully tracked down my phone's exact geo-location and also managed to capture a snapshot using my laptop's webcam (not that they're really missing).

So avoid that hopeless and tragic feeling whenever you lost your important gadgets. Install Prey now in case something bad happen. Once your precious computer/phone ever gets stolen you can assist the police to locate the missing device and even help to nab the culprit. If your local police is useless in this kind of scenarios, you can always ask for help from your preferred local gangster/along/Pekida branch members. Just to be safe, put a BIOS password for your computer or pray the thief is not smart enough as to reset your phone.

Register & download Prey for free on their website.

Postbox Express - free email client for Mac & Windows

For those who are tired of using Microsoft Outlook or its free counterpart - Mozilla Thunderbird, Postbox Express is another great desktop email client for your Mac or PC.

Postbox Express is based on the premium version of Postbox but with a lot less features. Some of them include:
search history suggestions
conversation view
simplified account & folder views
status update to Facebook & Twitter
support for POP, IMAP & RSS
easy account setup wizard
anti-phishing & malware services
add-ons

Bear in mind though, Postbox Express is no longer under active development and the last shipping version is 1.01. Apart from that this software does use some major CPU resources when sending or receiving emails so it's no good for low-end systems. That said, if you'd like to use a different, sexy yet functional email client, Postbox Express is worth a try. This software looks awesome on Mac OS and not too shabby in Windows. Get Postbox Express here.

Share files from the menubar with CloudApp

CloudApp is a simple Mac OS app that lets you share images, links, music, videos and files from the menubar.

Once installed, just drag any file to the menubar and the app will automatically create a short link copied to your clipboard. You can then use this link to share your upload with your colleagues or friends.

Additionally you can view, track and delete the uploaded files right from your menubar.

The free CloudApp account has 25 MB file limit and limits you to 10 uploads per day. The Pro account offers 250 MB file size per upload and custom domain link. Why should you use CloudApp instead of say, Dropbox? Well this app lets you share files with just about anybody through the shared link while Dropbox requires both party to have the app installed. CloudApp is great if you would like to share small files quickly and easily with your buddies.

CloudApp is officially for Mac only but the Windows extension - FluppyApp lets you upload files to CloudApp just as easily. iPhone users can also upload files through Cloud2go app while Android users can use DroidCloud. Sign up for CloudApp here or get FluppyApp for Windows here.

The Best Distraction-Free Writing Tools for Windows & Mac

A wise man once said, productive writing is 5% creativity and ideas and 95% distraction-free. Writers and bloggers especially need to apply focus to get their job done. Sometimes this is not easy to achieve when your computer is filled with so many distractions, the Internet for example is one huge elephant in the room that is difficult to ignore. Not to mention writer's block and other physical distractions. So today I am going to share with you my two favorite distraction-free writing tools that I regularly use with both my Windows & Mac machines.

Q10 for Windows

Q10 is a small and lightweight yet powerful distraction-free writing tool for Windows. I love the minimalist interface which displays nothing but a tiny bar at the bottom that shows the character, word and page count. Q10 has this customizable typewriter sound effect that adds a little character to your otherwise mundane writing tasks.

There is no standard toolbar and the functions are accessed by keyboard shortcuts. Q10 comes with spell-check, work tracking, timers and word-count targets. Q10 will save your text in simple txt or html format but of course you can always copy and paste your work elsewhere.

OmmWriter for Mac OS X

OmmWriter for Mac OS X is simply my favorite distraction-free writing tool ever. It's clean and simple user interface provides for a focused writing in a relaxing and serene environment. The free OmmWriter version comes with 3 visual and audio themes while the paid donation version comes with 5 additional themes.

You can access the major functions for this tool using shortcut keys and moving your mouse over the writing space will displau OmmWriter's toolbars and adjustable boundaries for writing. The publisher claims that OmmWriter is a humble attempt to recapture what technology has snatched away from us today: our capacity to concentrate. I just love this app because of its cute typing sound effect.

Afif App Awards 2010

Welcome to the 2nd annual Afif App Awards (see the inaugural award here. This award is dedicated to all the software and apps developer who had made my life easier with their innovation, creativity and hard work. Of course no real awards will be rewarded, just one big thank you from me for their awesomeness. And as always, all of my favorite app here are either open source or completely free.

Without further ado, here are this year's recipient in no particular order:

Best Online Syncing App - Dropbox (Windows,Mac,Linux,Web,Smartphone)

Although there are nearly a dozen free online syncing tools available now, some with bigger storage size (like SugarSync), Dropbox still leads the pack for its speed, reliability and cross-platform support.

Best Notetaking App - Evernote (Windows,Mac,Smartphone)

While facing stiff competition from Simplenote and Springpad, Evernote still made it as the best notetaking App this year due to its robustness and many features.

Best Graphic Editor - GIMP (Windows,Mac,Linux)

Open source, lightweight and almost as good as any off-the-shelf Adobe graphic suite, GIMP is still my favorite choice for an all round graphic editor.

Best Web Browser - Google Chrome (Windows,Mac,Linux)

Firefox could still be me favorite browser if only it doesn't hog too much memory and bring my Windows system to a standstill during heavy use. Google Chrome blazes past Mozilla Firefox to be my favorite browser this year.

Best Online Productivity App - Google Docs (Web)

Google Docs beats its computer in term of speed and ease of use. Furthermore an increasing number of web and mobile apps has made online sync available with Google Docs making it more accessible to a whole range of new devices. If only Google would upgrade its meager 1GB space limit.

Best Optical Media Burning App - ImgBurn (Windows,Linux with Wine)

ImgBurn is a powerful yet lightweight CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burning application that packs similar features to established apps such as Nero and Roxio but still totally free.

Best Password Manager - LastPass (Windows,Mac,Linux,Smartphone,Web)

Guess how many password do I have to key in everyday? Only one, thanks to LastPass who not only remembers all my passwords for me but also offers to fill web forms for me. What would I do without it.

Best Remote Access App - LogMeIn (Windows,Mac)

LogMeIn enables me to log on and control remote PC and Mac anywhere in the world. Need I say more?

Best Desktop Sync App - Synkron (Windows,Mac,Linux)

Synkron lets you sync files and folders across different folders on local or networked computers. You can also schedule for synchronization at regular interval and sync multiple folders and destination. Great for backing up your PC and servers because it's lightweight, easy to use and also open source.

Best Audio/Video Transcoding App - XMedia Recode (Windows)

XMedia Recode lets you choose from hundreds of available presets for transcoding your audio/video according to your device of choice. For example there's a preset for iPhone, iPad, Sony Walkman, Sony PSP, Creative Zen, XBox, Nokia phone and dozens more. Best for encoding multiple files and it also allows you to allocate CPU resource and shutdowns your PC when you finishes. Awesome.
